One worrying impact of the growth of digital signage and digital out-of-home media is the environmental cost from the ever increasing power requirement. Though new technologies are appearing which will reduce power consumption across digital displays – the daylight readible, large format signs being implemented around the globe remain veritable power guzzlers (particularly when compared to the posters they are replacing).

However for the socially responsible property or shopping mall owner looking to enhance its revenue and consumer experience with digital signage – there is a ‘green option’. US based EcoMedia Inc are a specialist advertising and media company, who set out to donate a significant portion of their revenues to green projects in the communities in which they install.

The approach seems to work, because such a property owner – Kimco Realty Corporation (the US’s largest operator of neighbourhood shopping centres), has just announced a deal with EcoMedia that will see it trial and then roll out a mix of traditional and digital media solutions to the nearly 1000 properties they manage. The first center in Mesa, Arizone, will feature both backlit advertising displays and four interactive kiosks (to be supplied by Aerva Inc) which will provide directional signage and also deliver promotional coupons to customers mobile phones for local retail redemption.

It is more than just marketing – EcoMedia’s work has already lead to the installation of solar panels at City Hall in Miami and to support of the Wetlands Project in Sacramento County. The company actively seeks out local programs and funds everything from solar panels, to hybrid car fleets and lighting retrofits.
